About Us
The Department of Anaesthesiology started as a small department with 2 qualified anaesthesiologists in the erstwhile Govt. Headquarters hospital (Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Memorial General Hospital & Govt. Ranees Hospital) is more than 100 years old and one of the oldest & prestigious institutions in the state of Tamilnadu. With the advent of the Medical College in 2017, the department expanded and is functioning with 3 associate professors, 7 Assistant professors & 9 Senior Residents at present. The annual intake for M.B.B.S. is 150 students since 2017 with the first batch due to appear for the final exams next month.
The hospital is functioning with General surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Family Planning & Speciality theatres. We regulary do all speciality surgeries like Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic surgery, Surgical Oncology & Facio-maxillary surgery. We also have a dedicated Centre of Excellence for Renal diseases that has a Renal transplant O.T.(Modular) & Urology O.T. which is expected to be operationalised shortly.
The hospital has separate Post Anaesthesia Care Unit,Surgical intensive care unit, Intensive medical care unit, Intensive respiratory care unit, Intensive coronary care unit, Neonatal & Paediatric intensive care unit and Obstetric intensive care unit. Our faculty regularly monitors and treats all the ventilator patients in these ICUs.
Our institution is equipped with 4liquid oxygen tanks of 16 Kl capacity with 3 Gas manifolds with around 1000 oxygen ports. We also have PSA plant of 1000litres per minute capacity with 250 KVA generator backup.
The department is running dedicated Pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic & Pain, Palliative care clinic on all days. The department is equipped with Anaesthesia workstations with respiratory & anaesthesia gas monitoring (Drager Perseus), Brain function monitor, Neuromuscular monior, Nerve locator, Patient controlled analgesia pump. Our faculty regularly use all advanced airway gadgets like Storz, King vision Videolaryngoscopes, Fibreoptic bronchoscopes (both adult & Paediatric). All our faculty perfom Ultrasound guided nerve blocks with our 2 high-end ultrasound machines.
The department has a Library and demonstration halls each with a capacity of 30 students and separate Professor, Associate Professor & Assistant professor rooms as per NMC norms. The department is regularly conducting academic activities for M.B.B.S. and Paramedical students (B.Sc. allied health sciences) in the form of lectures, Clinical demonstrations and Basic life support workshops. Our faculty regularly present interesting cases in the Clinical Society Meeting every month.
Government Pudukkottai Medical College is an approved center for Non-transplant Organ Retrieval and we have performed 3 cases of organ retrieval from brain dead patients.
We are well equipped to conduct PG degree courses with adequate faculties, equipments & clinical materials. Postgraduation in anaesthesia will immensely support the surgical departments and benefit the needy patients.
